When an athlete pushes too hard or trains for too long the body activates self-protecting mechanisms to produce a condition whereby the muscles concerned become shortened and less flexible in an effort to resist any further physical stretching. This can manifest to the athlete as fatigue and stiffness or pain in the muscles and joints.
If the athlete continues to train, this shortening of the muscles will transfer the stress to the tendon resulting in tendinitis. If left untreated this can lead to ruptured ligaments or tendons or possibly even stress-fractures of the bone.
ISDN, using acupuncture needles, introduces micro-lesions into the muscles, ligaments and tendons concerned which automatically kick-starts the body's self-healing system. When the body recognises these lesions the first thing it does is release the tension in the muscle concerned to prepare it for healing.
This release of tension should be immediate and may even sometimes be felt as a twitch by the athlete depending on the strength of the muscular contraction. The key thing is, though, that this release of tension is guaranteed to occur upon every treatment and does not diminish over time, that is, an athlete cannot become immune to the treatments.
Treating an injury works more or less in the same way. By needling affected areas you can promote self-healing in the body. One other major benefit of needling an injury is that it has been clinically proven to reduce the inflammation of the area concerned to the normal physiologic level at which it can assist in the healing process.
ISDN utilises the natural physiological healing processes of the human body in such a way that can reduce the risk of injury, speed up recovery from injury and actually increase athletic performance.
ISDN is the culmination of over 40 years of practice of, and research into acupuncture and its effect on the body by Dr Yun-tao Ma (PhD).
